A 35-year-old patient suffering from a rare nerve compression successfully recovered at Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road

35-year-old patient suffering from rare & and infrequent shoulder pain (suprascapular nerve)successfully underwent arthroscopic suprascapular nerve decompression at Fortis Hospital, Cunningham RoadSuprascapular Nerve Decompression is a minimally invasive surgical technique performed to release the compressed suprascapular nerve.

The team of doctors was led by Dr. Raghu Nagaraj, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road, Bangalore

The patient was suffering from a rare kind of shoulder pain that had restricted his shoulder movement, he had undergone two surgeries at private hospitals in Bangalore in the past for the same. Since there was no improvement in his condition, he visited Fortis Hospitals, Cunningham for further consultation and diagnosis. At Fortis, doctors diagnosed it as Suprascapular Nerve Entrapment, a severe nerve compression.

Suprascapular nerve entrapment is a rare condition, and it happens mostly due to an injury in the suprascapular nerve. Suprascapular nerve entrapment is an uncommon cause of shoulder pain and weakness. Timely medical intervention, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate treatment are vital in case of suprascapular nerve entrapment.

Commenting on the success of the surgery, Dr. Raghu Nagaraj, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road, Bangalore, said, “We had to handle this case very diligently as the patient had already undergone two surgeries in the past and did not see any improvement in his condition. We did a thorough investigation of the patient and confirmed the condition as suprascapular nerve entrapment. The previous two hospitals had missed diagnosing the patient for this condition because of which he had frequent shoulder pain and severe shoulder muscle weakness even after the surgery. Any further delay in the treatment would have led to the paralysis of the shoulder,

We conducted an arthroscopy suprascapular nerve decompression to release the compressed nerve as well as the pain. The patient was further managed with physiotherapy that helped in the complete recovery.”
