The Wall Of Colours

Fortis Hospitals at Bannerghatta Road held an organ donation awareness meet where a ‘Wall of Colours’ was unveiled at the hospital premises. The event known as ‘Colour Lives, Pledge to Donate’ saw active participation from experts who spoke about nobility and utility of organ donation to the audience & egged them to pledge their organs after they are gone. The Wall of Colours was unveiled by Dr Vivek Jawali, Chairman, Department of Cardio Vascular Sciences, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Council, Fortis Hospitals Karnataka.

Speaking at the event, Dr Vivek Jawali emphasized the need for organ donation and said, There is acute shortage of organ donors in India. This may be due to lack of awareness among common people about organ donation. Fortis underlines the urgency to raise awareness around benefits of organ donation. It is with this vigor that such events have been organized regularly by Fortis. Altruism comes naturally to us. This event was organized as we believe that every one of us has more to give. These initiatives have the ability to spur people to come forward to donate organs of their deceased beloved. This will save and help elevate the quality of lives of many patients in need of organs.

In India, the non-availability of organs leads to almost 5 lakh deaths every year. Nearly 1.5 lakh people are in dire need of kidney but only 3 thousand of them receive one.  A single donor can save eight lives by donating the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and small bowel. Also, by donating organs and tissues like eyes, skin, bones etc., a single donor can touch several lives. Over the last five years, the organ donation rate in the country has increased ten-fold from 0.05 to 0.5 per million and is likely to touch the 1 per million population mark in 2016. We have made a start but still have a long way to go.
