Echocardiography is currently the most widely used non-invasive imaging test for the evaluation of known or suspected heart disease. It involves a wide variety of techniques, both conventional and advanced. The conventional techniques are: M-mode, 2-dimensional / B-mode imaging, pulsed, continuous wave, and color Doppler imaging. Tissue Doppler imaging, strain by speckle echo, 3D echo, contrast echo, are some of the advanced techniques while stress echo and trans-esophageal echo are the specialized procedures.
In a given patient, any or all of these modalities may be used to detect and assess the nature and severity of suspected cardiac disease.
