About the Treatment

Maintaining optimum weight is a crucial aspect of achieving a healthy body and a healthy mind. A healthy body is one which is free from any type of disorders, diseases and/or illnesses. Although, there are a bunch of weight loss programs and crash diets which are routinely recommended all the time, the truth of the matter is that not every program would help in achieving the desired results – losing weight.

An abnormal body weight coupled with obesity can result in many diseases and health disorders later on in life if not checked early on. Needless to say, maintaining the correct weight along with eating right is more of a necessity than a want to ensure good living. If you have been worried about your weight and tried all other means to lose weight, the good news is that bariatric surgery can help you in finally achieving your long-term weight loss goals.

Bariatric surgery is a series of procedures that aid in weight loss by putting a restriction on the quantity of food the stomach can hold. At Fortis, we understand your desire for change and thereon are dedicated to helping you achieve your weight-loss goals by facilitating a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to weight loss management and obesity-related illnesses. We believe that bariatric surgery can dramatically improve the quality of your life while also putting accompanying health issues such as sleep apnea, diabetes and heart problems to rest.

Areas of Care/ Types of Condition

If you have been battling with weight issues for a long time and haven’t been able to shake off those stubborn kilos, you have come to the right place. Being overweight is a serious medical condition and should be taken very seriously. We understand your aspirations for leading a long, healthy and happy life and have all the appropriate procedures which can help you lose those extra kilos and start living a better life. At Fortis, we offer a range of bariatric surgical solutions that can be tailored to your specific needs. Accordingly, our multidisciplinary team of experts will be on hand to help you choose
the type of procedure that works best for you.

Gastric sleeve (laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy)

Also known as the sleeve, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a procedure which involves the removal of the lateral three-fourths (or approximately 80 percent) of the stomach with the aid of a stapling device. What is leftover of the stomach is a tubular pouch that looks like a banana.

The gastric sleeve process involves getting rid of the outer part of the stomach. What this helps in doing is drastically reducing the stomach’s capacity to store food thus curbing hunger signals as well. This makes it difficult for people to overeat as their stomach’s overall capacity to store food reduces by nearly 75-80 percent. This procedure has also been proven to be very effective in improving the outcomes of people affected by type 2 diabetes.

Gastric Bypass (Laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass)

Considered to be the ‘gold standard' of weight loss surgery – in a Gastric Bypass procedure – a small stomach gastric pouch is created by stapling the upper part of the stomach. This pouch is then attached to the small intestine to create a bypass. Food then bypasses most of the stomach, as well as the upper part of the small intestine, resulting in the body absorbing fewer calories and, in turn, gaining lesser weight.

A smaller pouch means the strongest possible appetite suppression as the food intake would be restricted leading to less food being consumed. In the majority of the patients, this option has made weight loss relatively straightforward resulting in almost one-third of the body weight loss. It also needs to be mentioned that although a gastric bypass might be difficult to reverse, our surgeon may able to do it if deemed medically necessary.

Gastric Band (laparoscopic adjustable gastric band)

Gastric Band surgery - also known as adjustable gastric band surgery, or AGB in short – involves the placement of an inflatable band around the upper portion of the stomach. This, in turn, helps in creating a small gastric pouch above the band which restricts the passage of food thus filling you up quicker while consuming food items. The overall result is a feeling of fullness that lasts for a longer duration. On average, individuals have reported having lost anywhere between 25-75 percent of their excess weight through this procedure.
