We Care about your Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health and Wellbeing is dependent on several physical, mental, emotional and social factors – all of which are closely interlinked. Getting a firm handle on how these factors collude and influence our ability to carry out various activities in our day-to-day lives while gauging its potential impact on mental illness is central to promoting the well-being of individuals.

We are aware that mental health is the leading cause of death and disability especially amongst young people in our country. After all, India has the highest rates of suicide in the world for young people aged between 15 to 29 (Source: WHO). A plethora of mental health and behavioral disorders such as severe mood and/or psychotic disorders, usually take root when a person is in adolescence and go on to continue through their adulthood. While there has been growing awareness of this problem, the truth of the matter is that in our country, there has been a stigma attached to mental health disorders and not many people come forward to report their problem or seek treatment. If these numbers weren’t dismal enough, there is a huge shortage of mental health workers including psychologists, psychiatrists, and doctors. Fortis is proud to be one of India’s leading mental health facilities that provide clinical evaluation and treatment services for a wide range of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral disorders in patients of all ages and cultural backgrounds. We seek to promote the recovery and psychological wellbeing of our patients with severe and emerging mental health issues as well as improve self-care, social and emotional functioning. Our team is passionate about fostering more authentic and safe conversations about your personal wellbeing, mindfulness and inclusive connections. By giving you the strength and support you need, we make sure you will be able to recover from any situation, thereby allowing you to lead your life the way you envisioned.

Our Facilities

We are known to facilitate patient-centric care and cutting edge interventions in a safe, therapeutic and engaging setting on an inpatient admission and outpatient basis. We work in collaboration with individual, family, and couples and empower them with the skills required to return to social participation and thereon, continue on to a bright future. We’re also committed to offering support that helps build our patient’s knowledge and skills concerning mental health issues while enabling them to reduce the degree of social isolation that often is a by-product of mental illnesses. We believe that the design of facilities has an integral role to play in healing patients, reinforcing vitality and soothing anxiety. Our facilities have been specifically keeping in mind the needs of our patients. We have collaborated with several award-winning architects and interior designers and taken great pains to ensure that every design element has been thoughtfully considered for accessibility, maintenance, and aesthetic appeal to create an engaging environment for the people we seek to serve.

Importance of Mental Health

A person of sound mental health can be defined as someone who goes about life easily coping with the normal stresses thrown in their direction while also being able to make a meaningful contribution to the community. However, when a person is unable to do so because of some prevalent mental and behavioral disturbances thus affecting the way the person thinks, behaves and interacts with society, then he/she is said to be afflicted with some form of mental illness.

Mental health is a topic which we often hear being brandished about in the news. We often think it’s an issue which affects only high-profile individuals owing to the stresses of life they are subjected to. However, the reality is that these are disorders which can affect people of any age, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic class. Here's some food for thought: As per a study carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015, it has been revealed that almost 20 percent of Indians suffer from a sort of mental illness in their lifetime – that’s almost one in every 5 Indians. A truly remarkable and startling statistic.

Mental illnesses come in a variety of types and differ in severity. Some of the commonly diagnosed mental illnesses include depression, anxiety and panic attacks, bipolar disorders, dissociative disorders, eating problems, loneliness amongst others. Nearly 50 percent of mental health disorders start by the age of 14, and three-fourths of mental health conditions are said to surface by age 24. While experiencing a mental health breakdown can be upsetting, frightening, and confusing time, especially initially, you should never perceive it as a sign of weakness, or that you are losing your mind. Despite what mainstream media or the public might lead you to believe, mental disorders are completely normal and they can be treated if professional help is sought.

If you ever feel that you’re the only one who feels this way, then you’re not alone. At the Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences at Fortis Bangalore, we have a range of services available to assist people experiencing mental illnesses including counseling services, events, clinical evaluation and treatment services, psychological therapies, and other support services. Needless to say, our system has been proven to improve mental wellness and in successfully treating mental health issues. Moreover, we also support you along the way by helping you identify and overcome the challenges that you are facing so that you can go out and achieve your goals.

Our Doctors

While we are aware that outstanding Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences facilities do exist, unfortunately, theyre not available widely in India. We understand how frustrating and difficult it can be to cope with services that dont provide the precise help you need, exactly when you need it. We established our Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences to fill this very void so that people can seek access to treatment along with round-the-clock support as and when they need it. At the Department of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences at Fortis Bangalore , we believe in leading social change by way of inspiring positive action. Spearheaded by Dr. Samir Parikh – a distinguished speaker who has led several national and international forums on mental health issues – along with one of the foremost mental health care providers in the private sector, our support team comprises of world-class psychiatrists, counseling psychologists, clinical psychologists, psychoanalytical psychotherapists, art therapists, special educators, and occupational therapists. Besides treating each patient as an individual, our team seeks to promote good mental health, prevent further illness, offer treatment, support recovery and provide mental health education in our communities across the country.

Often, a member of our team will be assigned as your care coordinator, to keep in regular touch with you and help plan your care. With decades of experience under our belt, our team’s enthusiasm for positive change and the use of practical tools has managed to consciously create engagement, productivity, and empowerment while impacting the lives of thousands of people all across the country. We endeavor to create a society where every individual can feel confident knowing that they can be able to talk about these delicate moments safely and honestly without the fear of being judged or discriminated against. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that even people with mental health and behavioral disorders can recover fully and flourish in society because of these experiences, not despite them.
